Our Classes

Parsvottanasana (supported forward bend with sides extended)

Beginner Class

This class is perfect for yoga newcomers, those new to Iyengar, or anyone seeking a strong practice foundation. Based on Iyengar’s preliminary course, we focus on classical poses that form the basis of yoga.

Students develop flexibility, strength, and body awareness while learning proper alignment and prop use. Each week, we introduce and review basic standing and seated poses, along with fundamental twists and backbends. Students learn the the preparation for sirsasana (head balance) against the wall and sarvangasana (shoulder stand) with support. Students can progress to Level 1 classes, though many continue here to further strengthen their foundation.

Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulder stand)

Level 1

For students who have a foundation of Iyengar Yoga or have completed the Introduction series. Each week focuses on a different group of asanas: standing, forward extensions, twists and backbends, and restoratives. Level 1 students build strength and flexibility; students learn sirsasana (head balance) away from the wall and sarvangasana (shoulder stand) variations; Supine pranayama is introduced.

Supported Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana (supported two-legs inverted staff pose)

Level 2

For experienced students with a regular practice that includes inversions. The practice includes sirsasana (head balance) variations, sarvangasana (shoulder stand) variations, arm balancing poses, deep forward extensions, twists, and coming up into urdhva dhanurasana (upward facing bow pose) from the floor. Seated pranayama is taught.

Sirsasana (head balance), in the ropes and at the wall

Ropes (Kurunta)

All levels (with Iyengar experience) are welcome. BKS Iyengar developed the system of ropes to provide active and passive support in asanas, so that the student can build strength, mobility, and steadiness. This class focuses on the creative use of the ropes in all poses: standing, forward extensions, back extensions, twists, inversions, abdominals, and recuperatives.

Yoga for Active Aging, Strength & Balance

Love yoga but just can’t handle the demands of a regular class?

Your instructor teaches Level 1 and 2 asanas with careful attention to alignment, props, and therapeutic variations to help you build genuine strength, stability, and independence in your body.

The pace is deliberate, the instruction is precise, and every student receives individual attention. If you are managing a chronic condition, recovering from injury, or simply want to practice with more care and intention, this is your class.

One requirement: the ability to get up and down from the floor independently.

Supported Kapotasana (supported pigeon pose)

Iyengar Intensity

A challenging class using props in unique ways in order to hold the poses longer and move from the external to the internal yoga experience. Based on the teachings of H.S. Arun (Experiment & Experience), the intelligent use of props help to channel energies and stabilize the asana (pose).

Prop requirements: yoga chair, 2 bolsters, 2 blocks, 4 yoga blankets, 2 belts, & yoga mat.

Bakasana (Crow pose)

Iyengar By the Book

Go to the Appendix 1 of Light on Yoga and you will find a course to learn all of the asanas in the book. Week by week, we follow the syllabus, from the most basic poses to the most challenging. Precise instructions, individual attention, and appropriate use of props make the impossible possible :-) The practice is intense and exhilarating.

Note: Best for seasoned practitioners who can balance in Sirsasana in the middle of the room for 3 to 5 minutes.
