FAQs
"Yoga is nothing if it is not
perfect harmony of the body, senses, mind and intellect,
reason, consciousness and self. When all these are integrated
that is true Yoga."
BKS Iyengar
Do I have to be flexible to start
yoga?
Not to start! The use of props (blankets, chairs, blocks,
etc) support your body while you are learning the poses.
Be sure to tell your instructor about your level of experience,
as well as any injuries or limitations you have.
What should I wear at the Sarasota
Yoga Center?
Comfortable, modest clothing: shorts or tights, short-sleeved
or sleeveless shirt. Barefeet are preferred.
What should I bring?
An open mind, an empty belly (refrain from eating about
2 hours before class), and a sense of humor. The Center
provides mats and props for your own use. You may bring
your own mat if you wish. Please complete the registration
form and mail it to us or bring it to the first class.
What are the benefits of Iyengar Yoga?
Physical benefits: As you become familiar with moving into
the asanas, you will learn how to strengthen your body;
increase balance and stamina; prevent injuries in joints
and muscles; and strengthen weak or injured areas.
Mental Benefits: You will experience increased mental focus;
calmness; and body awareness
Life Benefits: Moving in and out of the asanas you will
learn awareness of your breath that allows you to maintain
calm and reduce stress in your daily life.
Do I have to stand on my head
or collapse my legs into a pretzel to get these benefits?
Not at all! Beginner students can experience all of the
benefits. As students progress and become more confident
we introduce more challenging poses. Beginning and advances
poses are demonstrated, and the instructor provides direction
and support to insure students practice safely and effectively.
